Transforming Leeds Libraries digital offer

In today's digital age, libraries play a crucial role in providing access to information and supporting communities. In June of 2023, Leeds Libraries received funding from the British Library and the Arts Council to revamp their website, aiming to better connect with the public and provide an improved user experience.

This transformation wasn't just about appearance; it was about making vital information more accessible and enhancing the overall user experience. Working closely with a team from the Integrated Digital Service (IDS) and other contracted staff, the library service embarked on a journey to develop a new website using Drupal.

Why the change?

The service wanted a more visually appealing site to better engage users and advertise their services. Moving to Drupal also meant that they would have more control over their website as they could publish content themselves.

So, upon receiving the funding, the Library service alongside IDS and the other contracted colleagues set about improving their offer. Between August 2023 to January 2024, this collective dedicated time and resources to migrate to the new Drupal site. The result? A sleek, easy-to-navigate platform that serves as the main online presence for Leeds Libraries and Community Hubs.

So, what's new?

For starters, finding information is now a much simpler task. Whether it's learning about library services, upcoming events, or accessing online resources, visitors can quickly find what they need. The website's fresh look and improved functionality not only make navigation easier but also encourage users to explore the library's offerings further.

Again, however, it is not just about appearance and ease of use. By investing in this digital transformation, the library service is future-proofing its online presence and aligning with user needs. By continuously evolving and adapting to meet the changing demands of the community, the library can better fulfil its statutory role in supporting individuals and communities and adhere to Leeds City Council’s Best Council plan.

Moreover, the new website serves as a one-stop destination for residents, offering not only access to library services but also links to wider council services. This seamless integration ensures that visitors can access a range of support and resources conveniently.

The library service's journey towards digital transformation underscores its commitment to serving the community effectively in the digital age. By embracing change and investing in modern technology, libraries can continue to be valuable resources for individuals and communities alike.
